Windows Surface RT: 32Gb effectively has 20GB available

Microsoft has revealed the data it will take to load up Windows 8 mobile and Office onto a tablet or mobile device. For the full RT package expect a reduction of 12GB in size, that means a 32GB Surface tablet effectively only has 20GB available to the user.

Windows RT takes up a lot of space for a mobile operating system. iOS only takes up 1GB of space and Android stays under the 200MB line, that is without any additional skins installed.

Windows 8 RT is therefore a mammoth in comparison. Perhaps Microsoft need to provide a lot of drivers to get the various hardware combos working, where Android and iOS are the most sealed off systems.

The Surface tablet will be available later this month in the US and UK. Customers can order the slate in 16, 32 or 64GB capacities for prices starting at $499. The 32GB+ models come with a complimentary smart cover with keyboard mold for comfortable typing.
